Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsAccording to Over the Cap, free agent wide receiver Chris Hogan’s one-year contract comes with a $1.45 million cap hit in 2019. His signing bonus is a reported $300,000. I recently highlighted three reasons Panthers fans should be optimistic about Hogan’s signing and that list can now be expanded to four in light of his relatively small cap hit. A $1.45 million deal is small enough to keep the Panthers books out of the red and represents sufficient value to leave their rivals green with envy. Carolina didn’t have to break the bank to get Hogan into his new black, blue, and silver Panthers uniform and call Mint Street home. Hogan’s signing came out of the blue and caught many Panthers fans by surprise, but now that the contract figures are emerging it looks like a solid acquisition. Depth is always needed in the NFL, and for the Panthers this includes wide receiver. D.J. Moore plays a physical brand of football and Curtis Samuel has been injury prone. Without additional depth at receiver, any injuries to Moore or Samuel in 2019 would really leave the Panthers dead in the water or up a creek without a paddle, depending on your preference of idioms. Marty Hurney 2.0 continues to land solid free agents on team-friendly deals this offseason, and Chris Hogan can now be added to the growing list.
